Transcripts include letters, diaries, ledgers, and notebooks of Nicholson's family, and papers of Mary Nicholson McKay and brother-in-law Thomas M. Wales. Topics include abolition and the Underground Railroad, spiritualism, the Prairie Home settlement, religion and philosophy, family matters, an 1843 trip to New York to attend an abolition meeting, and recipes for medicine and personal grooming potions.

Nicholson, a native of Clinton County, Ohio, was an abolitionist active with the Underground Railroad. For a time he lived in a communal settlement, Prairie Home, near Urbana, Ohio. Nicholson was also interested in spiritualism and attended seances. He died in Indianapolis. A daughter, Mary, married Horace McKay.
